PLAGIARISM

Definition – Plagiarism is the use of someone else’s words or ideas without proper credit.

 

Typical Examples of Plagiarism

 

  • Turning in another person’s paper with your name on it.
  • Buying or copying a paper off the Internet.
  • Including parts of someone else’s works within your own.
  • Providing false documentation – both incorrectly cited and made up sources.
  • Omitting documentation completely.

Things to Cite

Direct Quotation – If you place a word for word excerpt from your source into your paper, the source / author must be cited.

Paraphrase – If you restate a passage from your source in your own words, the source / author must be cited.

Summarize – If you summarize the key concept or main idea from someone else’s work, you must give credit to the original source.
