The Director of Teacher Education has the responsibility for supervising the selection process for College supervisors, cooperating schools, and cooperating teachers. The Coordinator of Field Experiences will work directly with the Director of Teacher Education to select college supervisors for the program and will work with the appropriate district administrators to secure both cooperating schools and cooperating teachers. Communication in this process will begin with the district administrator and the Coordinator of Field Experiences. In most districts, the district administrator will negotiate with individual principals to secure the cooperating teachers. The principal will discuss with the prospective cooperating teacher the particular assignments of teacher candidates. The district administrator the principal or his designee will then inform the Coordinator of Field Experiences of the assignments for field experiences. The Coordinator of Field Experiences will work closely with the Director of Teacher Education to assure specific assignments are mutually beneficial. The Coordinator of Field Experiences will coordinate orientation sessions for cooperating teachers when needed.

Selection of College Supervisors

Selection of a faculty member as a College Supervisor will be based on the following criteria:

• The faculty member possesses the required background in professional education and in the teaching major to meet the needs of students in this field experience.

• The faculty member has completed advanced study as preparation for supervision of the teacher candidate during the field experience.

• The faculty member possesses public school experiences relative to the area of supervision.

• The faculty member has participated in the state or College ADEPT training.

Selection of Cooperating Schools

Without the collaboration between the local school districts and the college, the field experience program could not function successfully. To facilitate the effective interaction between the college and the school districts, the following guidelines have been established for school selection:

• The College will select a cooperating school on the basis of the school’s demographics, location, willingness to work with teacher candidates, and the nature of the field experiences needed. To participate in the field experience program, the cooperating school will fulfill the following obligations:

- the district will appoint an administrator to coordinate placement of teacher candidates in district schools;

- the district/school will appoint cooperating teachers who possess the traits of a master teacher and who desire to work in this program;

- the district/school will offer a curriculum that has both variety and academic depth to allow the field experience teacher candidate opportunities to utilize a diversity of teaching strategies;

  • possess the skills to evaluate and assess accurately the work of field experience students;
  • possess effective communication skills;
  • possess a high level of interest in professional teaching;
  • possess master teaching skills;
  • completed training in the state’s evaluation model for teachers.
  • have three years of teaching experience in the grade level/subject area for the field experience;
  • participate in an orientation session on field experiences as needed;
  • be recommended by the appropriate district administrator for the position of cooperating teacher;
  • receive favorable evaluations by teacher candidates and college supervisors;
  • willing to serve as a cooperating teacher; and
  • have been trained in ADEPT;

Procedures for School Placement

At the beginning of each semester, the Coordinator of Field Experiences will request the names of all teacher candidates in the areas of certification from the area coordinators. This is done to ascertain the types and numbers of school placements needed. In addition, all field courses will require that teacher candidates complete an information sheet outlining their level of placement and time flexibility. Teacher candidates enrolled in field experiences 195, 295, and 395, or their course equivalents, will be allowed to request a date and time. Candidates will sign up for placements at the first class meeting. If students request placements out of the immediate area and these requests can be accommodated, candidates will be allowed to visit other school districts. The Coordinator of Field Experiences will coordinate orientation sessions for college supervisors, cooperating teachers, and college students. Any changes in school assignments must be made jointly by the Coordinator of Field Experiences and the appropriate school district administrator.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance: All students are expected to attend all classes. Nothing can replace the valuable experience missed during an absence. Students may not be absent from the seminar and/or field settings for more than a total of two times during the semester. A third absence will result in a grade of “F” for this course.

Course Withdrawal/Grade of “ID” or “F”/Overcutting: A letter will be sent to the advisor if the student makes a “D” or “F” in these courses. The letter will suggest that the advisor discuss the student’s progress with him/her before the teacher candidate will be allowed to repeat the course and before the

appeal is made to the Teacher Education committee. If a candidate must withdraw from a field experience class because of attendance or academic difficulty; an appeal must also be made.

A teacher candidate who needs to repeat these courses for any reason must appeal in writing to the Teacher Education Committee three weeks before the beginning of the semester in which the candidate chooses to repeat the course. The appeal must explain the circumstances of why the candidate earned the grade and what the candidate has done or plans to do to correct the problems. The appeal must be given to the Director of Teacher Education.

Once a drop slip is signed for the teacher candidate or a warning has been sent to the candidate that he/she has overcut, the candidate may not return to the field experience school setting for any reason. At that point, the cooperating teacher will be notified that the candidate is no longer allowed to visit his/her classroom. If the candidate wishes to appeal the attendance policy and continue attending the seminar session on the Anderson College campus, the candidate may do so. The candidate may not return to the field setting until the appeal is completed and only if the appeal has been granted.

A teacher candidate may not enroll in a course requiring field experience visits for more than three times. If it is necessary for the candidate to withdraw and/or repeat the course three times, the candidate will not be allowed to enroll in the course again. If a candidate formally withdraws from the course by completing the withdrawal form, securing the teacher’s signature, and turning it in to the Registrar during the first week of classes in a semester, the withdrawal will not count against the total allowed for the course.

PROFESSIONALISM

Professional behavior is expected of Anderson College Teacher Candidates at all times while in a field setting. This includes proper demeanor, observing school dress codes, attending all classes, and ethical student/teacher relationships. As future teachers, candidates are expected to act in such a way that the school administration would want to hire them in the future. The way candidates represent themselves during the field placement reflects not only on themselves, but also Anderson College and could affect future career plans.

Specifically, candidates are expected to act responsibly by doing the following:

1. Report to the assigned classroom promptly and regularly. If you must be out due to illness, you are expected to act as a regular teacher would when he/she has to be absent. This means that it is your responsibility to call the school to let the teacher know that you will not be there. This call should be made as early as possible the day you are to go;

2. Candidates are expected to follow school dress codes. Most schools do not allow students or teachers to wear anything that would be disruptive to the school environment. This includes unusual hair color (pink, green, blue, etc.), unusual piercings (lip, tongue, eyebrow, etc.) tight clothes, tank tops, midriffs, and clothes that are too short or too tight. In addition, all candidates should present themselves professionally which includes shirts tucked in and appropriate shoes and socks/hose (no flip flops) and no demin;

3. Candidates are expected to ask to see and follow the school dress codes for both students and teachers. If you have any questions concerning what is appropriate, candidates should ask either the Anderson College professor or the building principal; and

4. Candidates are expected to be prompt, courteous, respectful, and responsible. If you are absent and fail to call the school, candidates are expected to write a note of apology to the teacher.

5. Candidates are expected to interact with the K—l2 student in the professional and ethical manner expected of a district employee.

The College seeks to provide opportunities for development of teacher-related skills through the field experiences. Success requires cooperation among the Director of Teacher Education, College Supervisor, cooperating teacher, the Field Experience Coordinator, school administrator, district personnel, and the teacher candidate. Each has clearly identified roles and responsibilities that must be met for the program to be effective, if a problem does arise in any field experience, the following steps are taken:

  • The college supervisor is notified of problem by either the teacher candidate or cooperating teacher;
  • The college supervisor takes determined action to resolve the problem;
  • If the problem persists, the college supervisor notifies the Field placement coordinator who will take the steps to resolve the problem; and
  • If necessary, the issue is brought to the Director of Teacher Education for further action which may include a hearing with the student and an appointed committee. The Director of Teacher Education is responsible for making a final resolution based on the available information.
