KINESIOLOGY
The Kinesiology program offers a degree in Exercise Science and one in Physical Education (K-12 certification). The degree in Exercise Science is offered for students interested in a career dealing with the response of the human body to physical activity and nutrition. The curriculum is in line with the recommendations of the national professional governing body, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). This assures students that the degree will prepare them with cutting edge theory and practical applications that will make them marketable nationally for related careers and graduate work.
Students who complete this program will be prepared for employment in exercise/fitness centers, hospital wellness programs, corporate fitness programs, rehabilitation centers, athletics programs, and allied health areas. Additionally, the program prepares students for advanced study in related fields such as exercise physiology, physical therapy, medicine, chiropractic medicine, and research. The program relies on a scientific core which allows the student to gain a complete understanding of human physiology and how exercise impacts that physiology.
Students interested in a career in Exercise Science should enter the program with a strong background that is grounded in the sciences. That is to help students complete the required core courses in the major as successfully as possible. The rigor of the program necessitates that students come into the program prepared to take Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biomechanics, Physiology, Anatomy as well as Statistics and Calculus. The hands-on work that students will do in the degree program in cooperation with local medical and/or rehabilitation and fitness-related community partners will help make graduates in Exercise Science at Anderson College more marketable to prospective employers or graduate schools.
The Physical Education (K-12 certification) program degree is designed to prepare graduates for certification in teaching K-12 physical education and and coaching. The program is geared to provide a scientific and pedagogical foundation with multiple public school experiences that enable students to observe, assist teachers and coaches, and practice teach prior to the final student teaching semester in which students are assigned to a public school every day for the semester. Because of the emphasis on field experiences and cutting edge theory, our graduates are prepared when they enter the workforce. In addition, our graduates work in diverse settings and are able to plan and teach individuals with disabilities successfully.
