Anderson University Lifelong Learning Institute is one of over 200 Institutes for Lifelong Learning currently in operation throughout the United States and Canada.
An Institute for Lifelong Learning is a member-driven organization which presents noncredit courses to mature learners who want to improve skills, exploring new ideas and interact with interesting and active people. The location of ACLLI on the Anderson University campus also provides members with access to a wealth of additional academic and cultural opportunities.
Philosophy
AU's Lifelong Learning Institute is Fun, Fellowship and an Academic Challenge without the traditional concern of term papers, grades or failure. ACLLI is planned, organized and governed by its members. All members are encouraged to contribute their skills As a member you may lead a course, facilitate a discussion group, be a classroom assistant, serve on a committee, or help plan and host social activities. The volunteer organization is our mechanism to keep costs low.
Membership
You become a member of Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University by registering for at least one course during each academic year. Membership entitles you to receive mailings and to participate in the ACLLI organization as much or as little as you choose.
Who Can Be A Member
Any adult who is interested in learning is welcome to join our ACLLI community. There are no age or educational requirements. We believe that the wider the educational backgrounds and work experiences of the members, the more versatile and interesting the membership. A rich mix of interests and backgrounds is both desirable and encouraged.
The Elderhostel Institute Network
ACLLI is affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, a division of Elderhostel, which assists colleges and universities in establishing and improving Institutes for Lifelong Learning.
ACLIR Organization
ACLLI is planned, organized and governed by a volunteer Executive Council selected from the membership. Other active committees include curriculum, finance, and publicity. ACLLI operates under a set of policies and procedures written and adopted by the membership.
Our Lifelong Learning Institute is an Anderson University community service program initiated by the Anderson University Adult & Special Programs Office.
Courses and Instructors
Courses and Course Leaders are selected by the ACLLI Curriculum Committee based on a survey of member interests and course evaluations. Course Leaders are a mixture of community experts and scholars, ACLLI members who have interests and expertise they are willing to share, volunteer discussion leaders, as well as active and retired AU faculty.
The ACLLI academic calendar includes two 8-week terms. Course listings and registration forms are mailed four to five weeks before the beginning of each term.
Course Registration
Registrations are accepted in the order they are received until classes are filled. Some classes may fill quickly and you will be notified promptly if you register for a class that is filled.
Within a few days of receiving your registration, ACLLI will send a written confirmation along with information about classroom location and parking. ACLLI will also promptly notify students if any class must be canceled for any reason.
Class Assistants
ACLLI members are encouraged to participate in the program by volunteering to be an assistant to the course leader. Class assistants hand out materials, make announcements and set up equipment for the class. Serving as a class assistant is a good way to know other class members better. Please indicate on your registration form if you are willing to be a class assistant.
