Tarzan of the Apes: A Multimedia Journey During the first half of the twentieth century, Tarzan swung through almost every boy's imagination. Even today, Tarzan is still alive and living in Africa as well as in comic books and comic strips. Edgar Rice Burroughs, a pencil sharpener salesman, published his second pulp fiction novel in 1912 - Tarzan of the Apes. The book followed in 1914. Followed by twenty-five Tarzan adventure books in several languages. Tarzan quickly caught on worldwide. From the first novel, 40 movies, hundreds of comic books, comic strips in most newspapers, radio shows, television serials, and an upcoming Broadway musical followed. Merchandise proliferated: toys, gasoline, games, underwear, costumes, ice cream, running shoes, etc., etc. etc. All of this is a lot considering the book came within a hair's breadth of not being published. In this four-session course, we will watch clips from some Tarzan movies, including the original (1918), and explore all the other aspects of Tarzan. Students will be encouraged to use the Internet for additional research, but this is not mandatory or necessary. Dr. JIM CHISMAN is a productivity consultant and retired professor of industrial engineering at Clemson University. He is an avid collector of antique art, furniture, and electro-mechanical devices. He and his wife, Jeanne, enjoy performing in Senior Follies and foreign travel. Writing Your Life Story The Creativity of Stephen Sondheim We've all heard and enjoyed Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rodgers, George and Ira Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and many other gifted composers or lyricists. Now, come and meet Stephen Sondheim! We will enjoy an anthology of his lyrics and music that first touched Americans in "West Side Story" in 1957. Broadway and American musical and stage drama has gone through a poignant transformation in the past 80 years. Stephen Sondheim is one of the giants who moved the transformation. American history, the institutions of marriage and family, divorce and other sensitive issues have been set to words and music in Sondheim's rich panoply of musical shows and reviews these past 50+ years. Come, and be introduced or reintroduced to: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; West Side Story; Company; Follies; A Little Night Music; Assassins; Pacific Overtures; Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George. As a special treat, Rosalind Silverstein will again delight students with several Sondheim songs. Thursday afternoons, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Course leader DICK COCKRELL has previously led discussions of musical giants such as Oscar Hammerstein II, Leonard Bernstein, and the Gershwin brothers, as well as a discussion of Porgy and Bess. In all, Dick has offered more than 15 outstanding programs for LLI friends. To register for any Lifelong Learning class, please call 864-231-2058 or email: cboles@andersonuniversity.edu |
