11/01/2009 - Women's Soccer Downs Mt. Olive - Claims 3rd Seed

Trojans Set To Host Erskine Monday Night
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Cat Thomas' goal in the 23rd minute of action lifted the Anderson women's soccer team past the Mount Olive Trojans, 1-0, in the Conference Carolinas' regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.

Anderson improved to 10-8 overall and 8-3 in the conference on the strength of its school-record seventh consecutive win and claimed the third seed in next week’s conference tournament.

The Trojans continued their record-setting ways, recording the most conference wins in school history with the victory, while Mount Olive wrapped up its 2009 campaign at 6-9-4 overall and 3-5-3 in the league.

Thomas’ second game-winner of the season came off an outstanding service from sophomore Kristin Page off the left side. While freshman Jessica Kleinberg decoyed, Thomas took the feed and beat Mount Olive goal keeper Jenn Sastre with a shot from 15 yards out.

“It was an incredible all-around team setup,” Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak said of the game-winning score.

The shots were nearly equal, with Mount Olive holding a slight 10-9 edge and the homestanding Trojans also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Stephens recorded four saves in the second half for AU.

“We had great defensive efforts from Tori [Danielson], Kristi [Caldwell] and Katelyn [Conover],” Dowiak added. “Kristin [Page] was outstanding at creating chances and both Kelli [Whitfield] and Alyssa [Stephens] played well in goal.

With the win, AU is set to host rival and sixth-seeded Erskine in the first round of the conference tournament Monday night at the AU Soccer Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Trojans dropped a 2-1 decision at the hands of the Flying Fleet back on Sept. 23.
