04/08/2009 - TROJAN TENNIS TEAMS FLY IN THE FACE OF FALCONS


The AU tennis teams have both put themselves in good position heading down the stretch with the women at 4-5 in sixth and the men at 6-1 in second
MISENHEIMER, NC--The Anderson University men's and women's tennis teams have been playing with that early season swagger a bit more lately, and on Tuesday when the teams visited conference foe, Pfeiffer University, that trend continued as the AU men beat the Falcons 9-0, and the AU women won 6-3, hopefully setting the tone for a very important preparation week heading down the season's home stretch toward conference tournament time.

"It really looks like the teams are both pulling it together here at the end," said head tennis coach Joey Eskridge. "And that is good--that is exactly what we want."

The AU men's only Conference Carolinas loss on the year came indoors at Lees-McRae, in an affair that was drawn out over 7 hours. The Trojans will look to that match as motivation, knowing that the Bobcats are this season's only conference blemish.

Stephane Murray is now 10-1 in singles competition as a freshman. As far as consistency goes, Murray has been as steady as this spring's rain, and alongside last year's ITA player of the year, Philip Pakebush, the Trojans now seem quite serious about making a title run.

The AU women improved their conference record to 4-5 in yesterday's 6-3 win over Pfeiffer. Having clinched an eighth place spot already in the Conference Carolinas tournament, the Lady Trojans now find themselves simply playing for a better seed. At 4-5, the AU women are only 2 1/2 games out of fourth place.

The AU men's team will host Lander on Wednesday at 2:30 at Max Grubbs Tennis Complex. The women will go to Lander on Thursday for a noon match.
