Story
01/14/2010 - Trojans Wrestlers Top Darton ANDERSON, S.C. - Returning home for the first time since early December, the Anderson wrestling team took advantage of three early pins to outpace Darton College, 28-17 in dual meet action Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
After surrendering a forfeit to open the match and falling behind, 6-0, the Trojan grapplers won three of the next four bouts and held an 18-10 advantage halfway through the match. Freshman Dequan Warner got things going for AU at 133 pounds, bursting out to a quick 7-0 lead and pinning Darton’s Zach Buros-nash with less than two minutes gone. At 133, junior Chris Francis pinned the Cavaliers’ Jovanni Garrido at the 1:19 mark.
Anderson freshman Melchisedac LaVergne suffered a setback at 149, but J.J. Jackson showed his senior leadership and notched a pin just as time expired in the second period to give AU the eight-point cushion.
Junior Trevor Sanford and senior John Hamrick posted back-to-back wins at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Sanford gained an early 4-0 lead and went on to post an 8-3 win over Darton’s Dustin Brunner, then Hamrick garnered an impressive 16-6 major decision past DC’s Muhammad Bois to give AU a 25-14 edge.
Junior Adam Newton suffered a narrow, 3-2, setback at 197, but Chase Duke closed out the night by rallying for a 6-2 decision over the Cavaliers’ Rudy Joseph in the final period.
"Although we didn't wrestle as well as I expected overall, I am pleased with the effort, energy, and intensity that several guys displayed,” Anderson head coach Dock Kelly said. “Dequan Warner continues his steady improvement and Chase Duke is beginning to fulfill some of his tremendous potential. JJ Jackson, Trevor Sanford, and John Hamrick continue to lead by example by defeating their opponents in dominating fashion and that is exactly what this young team needs to see. We have a tough match versus Shippensburg this coming Saturday, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the team responds as we face a quality team in a hostile environment."
Anderson, which improved to 5-4 in dual meets this season, has little time to rest as the Trojans go on the road to visit Shippensburg (Pa.) University on Saturday. The match versus the Red Raiders is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Heiges Field House.
