01/26/2010 - Anderson Grapplers Wrap Up Super Region I DualsNEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Anderson wrestling team battled three top-15 teams this past weekend at the Super Region I Duals hosted by Newberry College.
Anderson was unable to come away with a victory over the weekend, dropping contests to three of the top programs in the country and a tough Seton Hill squad on Friday and Saturday at Eleazer Arena.
The Trojans dropped their first match, 39-6 to No. 15 Kutztown on Friday, followed by a 30-12 setback against No. 9 Mercyhurst on Saturday. In the second dual of the day, Seton Hill edged Anderson, 23-16. The Trojans wrapped up their weekend action by falling,
35-6 to No. 12 West Liberty State.
Kutztown, Mercyhurst and West Liberty featured 18 wrestlers ranked in the top six of the of the region, including three of the No. 1 ranked grapplers in Super region I.
Anderson’s J.J. Jackson continued his stellar season, posting a 3-1 record at the two-day event, while teammates Cory Monteforte, Melchisedac LaVergne and Trevor Sanford each picked up wins against Mercyhurst.
Jackson scored AU’s lone points in the opening match on Friday versus Kutztown, as the 157-pound senior earned a fall past the Golden Bears’ Derek Schmelyun just 32 seconds into their bout. He suffered his only setback of the weekend when top-ranked Andy Lamancusa of Mercyhurst scored a narrow 3-2 decision in Saturday’s first match.
Anderson’s Monteforte picked up a forfeit at 125 pounds against No. 9 Mercryhurst, while LaVergne scored a 6-4 win at 149 over the Lakers’ Robert Blotzer. Sanford closed out AU’s scoring when the 174-pounder notched a 3-2 decision past Mercyhurst’s Pat Leahy.
The Trojans rebounded with yet another strong effort against Seton Hill, as Jackson posted an 18-2 win over the Griffins’ Josh Voelker at 157, while Sanford garnered his second win of the day with a 6-4 decision at 174. AU’s Luis Audelo and Chase Duke recorded back-to-back wins at 197 and 285, respectively.
AU closed out the weekend versus 12th-ranked West Liberty, with Jackson registering his third win of the meet, a 5-3 decision over Kayne Melco.
Anderson will get back in action on Thursday when the Trojans play host to Limestone and The Citadel. The Citadel meets Limestone at 4 p.m., while AU squares off against Citadel at 6 p.m. and Limestone at 8 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
